    Dog Food Follow-Up

I received some information this morning about a company that is offering a new service to pet food manufacturers. The press release ("Pet Food Verification Service Launched in Response to Melamine Related Recalls,") describes how Pet Supply Verified would offer independent product testing for pet food companies and help them rebuild consumer confidence. Might not be a bad idea.

The web site of the new service, http://petsupplyverified.com/Home/tabid/37/Default.aspx, provides some good information for pet owners, including recall information. They have a list of all recalled foods, news articles about the pet food contamination and recall, FDA news, and links to other sites which have been tracking pet food information.

Their informational articles on pet food are very helpful. I recommend Pet Food Labeling Requirements as a good place to start.

It will be interesting to see if some pet food companies make use of this new service. Big companies, like Purina and Pedigree, who have not been much affected by the pet food recalls, may have their own in-house product testing services. However, smaller companies, who farmed out production of their products, have been very hurt by relying on outside manufacturers. An outside verification source of their products' contents and safety sounds like a good idea to me.

    (Back to great dogs now!)
