Today's Cool Dog Newsletter is the second one of the series that deals with the issue of lead walking your dog.

I hope you enjoyed the first newsletter of this section on lead walking. Today I am going to share with you the missing part on how to easily walk your dog on a leash and how teach him the hell command.

Take a look below to learn more.

Teaching your dog to heel is essential if you intend to take him out and about with you. It can be great fun to be out and about with your dog on all kinds of activities if he is obedient and well trained. Being trained to heel will ensure that your dog does not come to any harm when he is joining in family activities outside of the home.

If you have a puppy he can more easily be trained to heel without a lead at first. All puppies love to follow their leader, and this can be taken advantage of in the training to heel program as he will want to stay close to you. You can also incorporate food treats into the training, as he will be easy to lead when he can smell food.

To begin training your puppy to heel you first need to attract his attention. Do this by holding his collar and saying his name. Once you have his attention begin to walk in a straight line. Hold the treat reward out in front of your puppy. Keeping your hand near his collar, say the command "heel".

Stop walking and kneel to his level. Say the "wait" command and put your hand under his belly to stop him moving forwards. Practice this by walking at different speeds. Walk more quickly and then more slowly, always giving the "heel" command. Do the "heel" and "wait" commands until the puppy has the hang of them at different speeds. Once your puppy has got these commands, try teaching him to turn around with you.

To teach your puppy to turn to the right, simply bend your knees so that you are at his level. Let him smell the treat and turn right saying the command to "heel". He will turn as you turn by speeding up a little, all the time smelling the treat in your hand. Eventually take the treat away and reward him with praise.

To teach your puppy to turn left, put your hand on his collar and guide him gently to the left. Use the "heel" command as you do it, and he will soon get the hang of it.

If your dog becomes distracted during training, then regain his attention by putting your hand on his collar and saying his name.

"If you think dogs can't count try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then giving Fido only two of them." - Phil Pastoret

In the next newsletter I will share with you the 5 wrong reasons to get a dog.

Have a great Dog Training day,
