FUR COVERED BATTERIES
There are days when I wonder if I will make it through the next 24 hours. I take in strays, usually dogs. They make a visit to the vets, get a bath, fed, loved up, but at times their coats are so tangled, a groomer will shave them.
One day, I agreed to babysit two ferrets for a friend. I like ferrets, and realize they are tiny fur covered batteries that never seem to run out of power. Within an hour they had taken over my house.
They chased my Maltese, Jasper, out of his bed. His treats were stolen along with his sock with a knot in the center, that to him was like a security blanket. When he is left at home alone, he’ll get out his knotted sock to pack around for comfort.
Within hours, I lost the ferrets. I knew they were in the house, but where? My friend was due to pick them up any moment. I was absolutely frantic.
I have one stay dog at the moment, who had to be shaved. His coat just couldn’t be saved. Because my home is air conditioned, I put a long loose sweater on him that covered him from his ears to his bottom.
I was in tears over the missing ferrets, when I noticed an odd look to the sweater on the dog. It had developed a pot belly. If the dog lay down, the lump moved! The ferrets had picked a perfect place to hide. I pulled them out gently, laughing when one of them had a firm grip on Jasper’s beloved sock.
I offered my sweet Maltese back his sock. He sniffed, then showing his huge displeasure over
it’s new smell he piddled on it. Okay, I took the hint. I threw it out, giving him a new one. He
immediately, went under the bed, his tiny teeth had a death grip on his new security sock.
On my belly, looking under the bed at him, I promised I would never babysit ferrets again. Not ever! Well……maybe not until the next time!
