    Dating With Dogs

The subject of dog training reminds me of when I first started dating my significant other. Sadly, for him, he did not have the pleasure of growing up around dogs or any other kind of animals. Judging from movies, he thought all dogs behaved like Lassie or Rin Tin Tin. Arriving at my house for our second date, and his first meeting with my eight dogs (at that time), he was somewhat startled when they shoved their noses somewhere below his belt to greet him.

"They're just saying, 'Hello,'" I told him helpfully.

It wasn't long before he thought he would take charge of the situation. He looked at Beau and told him, "Sit." Beau looked back at him, wagging his tail. "Sit." Beau looked at him. Clearly something was required of him so he jumped up and licked my date's face.

"He's just being friendly," I said, trying not to laugh.

Four years later and Beau does know how to sit. My significant other has learned not to expect too much or give the dogs too many commands.

I think this is proof of the Will Rogers' saying: "If you get to thinking you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around."
